Bernard Chandran Autumn Winter 2010 Bernard Chandran's AW10 collection is one that should definitely be recognised for those attention-grabbing pieces. Yes, there were elements that represented the 'sleek and androgynous' look, but that has been done often and by many. Also, when would we ever refuse a chance to discuss the theatrics of fashion? Chandran had over-the-top feathers, gallons of gold sequins and oversized bags that only his catwalk could contain. Firstly, Chandran seemed to turn sleeves into wings, in a feathered frenzy that was not muted by the monochrome colour choice. He also brought out more magic with multi-coloured, fully-feathered pieces with accessories to match, in purple, black and electric blues. The other show-stoppers were the beautiful gold, sequinned and backless dresses that were decadent, but without being garish. Makeup was also just as theatrical with painted faces and contrasting lip colours, which meant the looks definitely did not lack luster. However, it is also important to mention that the collection was very sensual as well. The feathers were a clear use of texture and proportion. Yet, Chandran took inspiration from his cultural roots and the natural environment. This is evident through the organic elements that were used - roped belts, wool and an earthy colour scheme as a foundation, which was then contrasted with the boldness and brashness of the pops of colour and zings of gold. Chandran presented a double faceted collection - more wearable pieces alongside those 'winged models' - and with Beverley Knight and Mr Hudson in the front row, this collection is sure to take off. - Annie Chin Note from the Editor - We also had the privilege of meeting Bernard himself at the Awana Restaurant, at a small private party. It was fantastic to hear about his inspirations and motives first hand, all whilst enjoying the delicious malaysian food that had been put on by both Awana and Malaysia Kitchen. There is no doubt that Bernard Chandran will continue to push boundaries for many years to come.
