When an Autumn/Winter 2010 collection is self-named 'Tomorrow The Great', there are definite expectations that are conjured. Daunting for some, yet Sass and Bide have a certain appeal that gives them a failsafe stronghold over the style savvy. Certain design aesthetics greeted us like old friends at Sass and Bide AW10. However, there was also a sense of progression that came with the collection's title. The Sass and Bide girl of 'Tomorrow' will indeed be great - a rock and roll girl gone chic, with a real sense of glamour, but not forgetting some effortlessly cool, pirate inspired, hareem pants thrown in. So, still sticking to their signature of mostly monchrome plus metallics, Sass and Bide took us on more of a journey with this collection. There were hints of old school glamour with black lace and high edwardian necklines, detailed with 'doily-esque' cut-outs. There was also a suggestion of a trip across the pond - aztec-esque prints and not to mention picking up some shells off the beach along the way to create those heavily embellished collars and shoulders. Sass and Bide really dug into their arts and crafts box with this one, using feathers, perspex and bone to adorn each item. The range of shapes complemented the range of materials. Body-con, cut-out dresses and longer length gowns created clean silhouettes, so the Sass and Bide team could really go to town with those decorative details. Overall, Sass and Bide presented a Autumn/Winter collection for 2010 that they claimed 'celebrated the drama of contrast and contradiction'. It was one that every girl wanted to walk right off the runway and into their wardrobes. So, as to whether tomorrow will be great, there is surely little doubt and admittedly, today is looking pretty good too. - Annie Chin
