The Waldorf was an apt venue for Maria Grachvogel’s Autumn/Winter 2010 collection that oozed pure sophistication. Models were literally gliding down the catwalk in the packed out ballroom and most importantly each and every one mastered a Cinderella, debutant-esque walk down those stairs every time. With Erin O’Connor and Yasmin Le Bon, in a black jumpsuit and red lips, gracing the front row, the collection certainly matched up to the glamour of its audience.First out were monochrome combinations, but this collection showed how to do it best; for example, the exquisitely cut white buttoned shirts teamed with wide leg-lengthening trousers would make any woman queen of the workplace. But colour was where this collection truly shone. Following some all black combinations, red and green floor length, loosely draped dresses and eye-popping ochre yellow, strapless gowns (where the ballroom setting really came into its own), in contrast, definitely took the collection into a section of ultimate glamour. Our personal favourite were the inky graphic prints that seemed to make the gowns move beyond the strides of the models. Grachvogel experimented with a range of shapes - mid-length hemlines, long sleeves, and plunge backs and necklines. The minimal shapes made the whole collection seem effortless; clean cut, but yet so refined. It was enviously and beautifully simple. - Annie Chin
